In the United States things are much different. There are no federal regulations regarding state lotteries and the result is a confusing patchwork of conflicting regulations from state to state. In many states the opposition to online lottery ticket sales has been fierce. Generally the opposition cones from religious groups that oppose all forms of gambling and convenience store owners who see online ticket sales as threatening their livelihood. These organizations are politically powerful particularly in the south.
